😰 Is it game over for Netflix?

Hey 👋 Hope you’re having a great week so far! This week’s Haystack Digest is brought to you by Street.
Street is on a mission to transform the property industry. People moving home regularly cite a lack of transparency and a painfully slow process, and that’s often due to the technology in Estate Agent’s hands. For the past six years, Street has been working hard to change that.
Fancy working within the PropTech sector? Street is currently hiring for 4 opportunities.

The first quarter of 2022 hasn’t been the best for tech giant Netflix. The streaming service suffered a big hit as thousands clicked the unsubscribe button 👎 - and Netflix has warned that there could be a lot more in the next coming months. But, what’s caused the loss?
Netflix has tightened their rules as well as upping its subscription costs from £13.99 to £15.99 per month but is this enough to lose thousands of customers? Or, does it boil down to the competition from the likes of Amazon Prime and Disney+?
In other news, Elon Musk stuck to his word and has bought Twitter for a huge $44 billion. 🤑 Not much seems to have changed since the takeover - but he does have multiple plans for the social media platform, including charging corporate companies a small ‘fee’ to continue to use its services.

Have you ever wondered how people would survive if they lived in space? What would they eat? 🤔
As of last week, experiments began to see if meat cells can be grown successfully. Aleph Farms, an Israeli company specialising in growing meat from cells, is one of the first companies to try and produce “cultured meat” specifically for space. 🧑‍🚀
Their space program, Aleph Zero, is part of a mission to produce quality, delicious meat that’s independent of climate, or availability of natural resources. And, it also means that the life cycle of a farm animal raised completely for meat production is completely bypassed!
The future of life in space is definitely at the top of the agenda for the likes of Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk who both want to colonise space but even growing meat cells down here on Earth is proving to be difficult.
But, even if the experiment goes to plan, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good idea or any easier than simply transporting food from Earth up into space. 🤷

🧑‍💻 Dev, Data & Design
Next week is Mental Health Awareness week 🧠 - so we want to remind you that it’s okay to not be okay.
Looking after your physical, as well as your mental health, should be a top priority. As much as you might love your role as a developer/engineer, you can’t give your all and put in your best efforts if your mental health is suffering.
We spoke to Haystack’s dev team to find out how to maintain good mental health as a software developer ⬇️
Sharon - My advice for developers that work remotely is to get or borrow a dog if you can. I always find it’s best to break up your working day too - I try to take a walk on my lunch most days.
Howard - Try to keep to regular working hours and have a dedicated work space that’s only for work. It’s best to also try to not take work into the rest of where you live.
Remember - it’s not embarrassing or degrading to share your thoughts and feelings. Be proud to be able to speak up and ask for help if you need it!
